SERMON:Having Possessions and Being Possessed | Matthew 6:19-21
October 24, 2012
Here is the video of the sermon I preached Sunday at the Shiloh Church on Matthew 6:19-21. I called it, "Having Possessions and Being Possessed." In the message, I argued that to have possessions without being possessed by them, you must... I. Be concerned of where your treasure resides (vv. 19-20) II. Be committed to treasure that remains (vv. 19-20) III. Be concerned about what your treasure reveals (v. 21) You can also read the sermon manuscript here. I love the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church! We had a good time in my BSF class this morning. I taught from 1 Timothy 1:12-20. I called it, "A Defense against False Teachers." (In typical H.B. fashion, I did not finish my lesson and will have to pick it up next week.) As always, I am excited about the guests we had in worship today. Praise God for those who were baptized today, including a mother and her four children. I can still see the father's excited face in the hallway before service. Wonderful! I preached, "Having Possessions and Being Possessed,"...

Yesterday was a long, good day of worship. I really enjoyed teaching my Bible Study Fellowship group. In completed an exposition of 1 Timothy 1:3-11. I plan to teach 1 Timothy 1:12-17 next week. As always, it was great to have our guests in worship yesterday. Our children’s choir sang during the 10:15 service. Hailey participated for the second time. And for the second time, she stared at the floor monitors, rather than actually singing. The choir sang a Thomas Whitfield classic, “Only A Look.” Loved it. Praise God for the seven persons who were baptized yesterday! I preached from...

I love first Sundays! We celebrated the Lord’s Table in both worship services. We also welcomed our new members that completed New Members Class Saturday. What a joy! By the way, I really enjoyed my time with our new members Saturday morning. They had really great questions. And I enjoy talking about Christian doctrine. I was encouraged by their eagerness to learn. It was good to have our guests in worship today, including the Raines High School class of 1977. In my Bible Study Fellowship group, I taught from 1 Timothy 1:3-8: “A Warning against False Teachers.” In typical H.B....

Today was Missions Emphasis Day at Shiloh. It was a good day, which capped off a good week. Praise God for the one who was baptized today. As always, it was great to have our guests in worship with us today. I met Michael Eric Dyson today. I have read most of his books. It was cool to meet him in person. Our women’s chorus, under the leadership of M. White, did a great job today, leading us in musical praise. Dr. Hensworth W.C. Jonas was our guest speaker today. He is the leader of the East Caribbean Baptist Mission....

It was a rare Sunday, in which I was away from my congregation. I missed being at Shiloh today. But I received good reports of a blessed day. I really missed my Bible Study Fellowship group today. West Wilson preached both morning services. Thanks for your ministry of the word to the saints today. Praise God for those who professed Christ and were added to the church today. I am in Chicago. I preached this morning for my friend, Romell Williams, who is celebrating 8 years of service to the Lilydale Progressive Baptist Church. I preached “Built to Last” (Matt. 7:24-27)...

It was a beautiful day in Jacksonville. And a wonderful day of worship at Shiloh. Our new Bible Study Fellowship group semester began yesterday. It was great to see the saints gathering for classes. I am teaching a class this semester on the Epistle of 1 Timothy. I did part 1 of an introduction to the letter. Actually, the lesson is only 1 part. But I didn’t finish it. I have never taught through 1 Timothy. I look forward to studying and teaching it. Praise God for the one brother who was baptized. I resumed my study of 1 John...

What a day! What a church! What a Savior! Thank God for the guests who joined us in worship. Praise God for the 9 persons who were baptized. Our Genesis Choir (children) sang for the first time since their summer break. Hailey, my 4-year-old, participated for the first time. Well, "Participated" is a strong word. She stood there and watched herself in the TV monitors, for the most part. I prayed for our Bible Study Fellowship (Sunday School) teachers and workers. Our new semester of classes begins next week. Grateful for a strong group of volunteers. You make it happen! Our 10:15...

It’s September already. Wow. We have a blessed day of corporate worship at Shiloh today. Thanks to all our Bible Study Fellowship (Sunday School) workers for making yourself available to serve the congregation today. You make it happen! I am grateful for all the guests who were in worship with us today. Even though my voice is gone, I enjoyed leading the congregation in corporate singing today. The choir sang one of my favorite Richard Smallwood numbers, “I Will Sing Praises.” I continued my study of 1 John with a message entitled, “What it Means to be a Child of...

It has been a long day. It has been a long weekend. It has been a long weekend. I spent Saturday morning with our church deacons, during their annual retreat. I taught on "The Ministry of Deacons." It was a great time of study and fellowship. I look forward to our next time together. I am in Lexington, Kentucky. I was invited by a seminary classmate, Victor Sholar, to preach the 150th anniversary celebration at the Main Street Baptist Church. Pastor Sholar has served the Main Street Church for about a year, having relocated from Los Angeles. He is a...

I love my congregation. What a church! Thanks for praying for the Shiloh Church family this weekend. Yesterday was a difficult day for our congregation, as we mourned the death of one of our faithful and beloved pastors, Mike Rodgers. Yet there was joy in the midst of sorrow. Please continue to pray for the Rodgers family and the Shiloh Church. God is so faithful The day of worship started with a spirit of heaviness. But over the course of the day, you could sense the Lord lifting our spirits as we worshiped him. Great is the Lord! Likewise, remember...

It was another great day at the Shiloh Church. God be praised! Quick testimony: I love my church! We baptized seven people today. Praise God! During our 8 AM service, the choir did, "He's Worthy," recorded by Jonathan Greer in the 80s. Great song! Glad and grateful for all of our guests today. J. Moss was our guest soloist at 10:15. He did "Praise on the Inside" and "Good and Bad," from his new CD. What a blessing! I made the big mistake of trying to sing after J. Moss. What was I thinking? I continued in my study of...
