  • Notes from Sunday – 08/05/12
  • It rained pretty hard this weekend. It scared many of the saints away from church today. But we still had a great day of worship at Shiloh.

In spite of the rain, we had many guests today. A family reunion. And the football team from Edward Waters College.

We observed the Lord’s Supper in both worship services. What a blessing!

Praise God for the new members who received the right-hand-of-fellowship today!

I was politely warned today that I need to get back to teaching Sunday school soon. Warning heeded.

I finally made it back to 1 John. Long story. Really long story.

I preached 1 John 2:18-27. I called the message, “Make Sure Your Doctrine Is Right!”

I argued: Your commitment to sound doctrine is an essential test of saving faith.

There are three reasons why you should make sure your doctrine is right:

    I. Doctrine divides (2:18-21).

    II. Doctrine matters (2:22-23).

    III. Doctrine sustains (2:24-27).

This is a long, important text. I struggled over whether to divide the text into two sermons. I am glad I present the unit of thought in one message. But I did not get to deal with the entire passage in either service.

I plan to preach 1 John 2:28-29 next Sunday.

Praise God for those who were saved and added to the church today.

For the record, it basically stopped raining when we got out of church. Go figure.

    The Olympics are great!

Confession: I just really started paying attention to the Olympics.

Serena Williams won gold in the London Olympic Games. She also captured the doubles gold medal with her sister, Venus.

Andy Murray avenged his Wimbledon loss to Roger Federer by winning gold at Wimbledon against Roger Federer! How you like that?!

Kobe Bryant was right. If the USA Basketball fails to win gold, they should not be allowed back in the country!

Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history. But is he the greatest Olympic athlete of all time?

Somewhat quietly, Floyd Mayweather was released early from prison this weekend. But we are still no closer to an Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

I am not sure you noticed. But football is back!!!

Condolences to Eagles Coach Andy Reid and his family in the death of his son today.
