Give Mark a Minute!

July 13, 2015
By H.B. Charles Jr.
I have always wanted to preach a sermon or teach a lesson entitled, “Give Mark a Minute!” Do you know who John Mark is? John Mark assisted Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey (Acts 12:25; 13:5). At some point, however, John Mark left the team and returned to Jerusalem (13:13-14). The gospel work continued without him. As Paul and Barnabas prepared for their second missionary journey, Barnabas proposed they bring John Mark. Paul flatly refused. John Mark had gone AWOL the last time. Paul saw no benefit in bringing this ministerial deserter with them again. Disagreement over John...

What I Said to the Church Yesterday

June 29, 2015
By H.B. Charles Jr.
Last Friday (6/27/15), the Supreme Court of the United States issued a landmark 5-4 decision, making same-sex marriage the law in all fifty states. Pastors across the country prepared to respond to the verdict in the Sunday worship services. We had a guest speaker scheduled at the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church, where I serve as pastor. Our guest speaker challenged and encouraged us with Romans 8:31: “What then shall we say to these thing?” If God is for us, who can be against us?” God willing, I will be in the pulpit this coming Sunday. I plan on using that...

An Evangelical Statement on Marriage: Here We Stand

June 26, 2015
By H.B. Charles Jr.
The following statement is found at the Southern Baptist Conventions' Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission website, where you can find other Christian resources in response to the SCOTUS ruling on same-sex marriage. I fully affirm and joyfully signed this statement. Please consider the following my personal and official response to the SCOTUS ruling.  As evangelical Christians, we dissent from the court’s ruling that redefines marriage. The state did not create the family, and should not try to recreate the family in its own image. We will not capitulate on marriage because biblical authority requires that we cannot. The outcome of...

Bible Study: The First Thing. The Main Thing.

June 25, 2015
By H.B. Charles Jr.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 The Bible is God’s self-revelation to us. To misrepresent scripture is to misrepresent God. The nature of scripture as God-breathed truth demands we study it carefully, present it faithfully, and obey it wholeheartedly. [Tweet "To misinterpret scripture is to misrepresent God."] The word of God is necessary, powerful, and sufficient for spiritual development and Christian service. It teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains in...

June 22, 2015
By H.B. Charles Jr.
It is time to study the word of God. You pray for illumination (Psalm 119:18). You select a passage of scripture to study. You then… This is where many people get stumped. Every time. They come to the text with good intentions. But they do not have a clear process for properly understanding the text. To get the right answers in your study of scripture, you must ask the right questions. This is called inductive Bible study. Here are five fundamental questions to ask as you study a passage of scripture. OBSERVATION: What does the text say? Just because you...

Weak Sermons Need Music To Prop Them Up

June 11, 2015
By H.B. Charles Jr.
Have you seen The Preacher’s Wife? It is a 1996 movie starring Denzel Washington and the late Whitney Houston. I went to see this movie when it came out in theaters. But I checked out during an early scene. The pastor was preaching his sermon. It was not going well. The preacher’s wife – Whitney Houston – who was also the music director, decide to save the day. The preacher made another point. His wife then led the choir in a musical response. It happened several times, until he gave her the look. I felt that way recently, preaching away...
