An Essential Part of Planning Your Preaching

July 25, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
I am a proponent of planning your preaching. I plan out my preaching a year in advance.  And I urge other preachers to do the same. But any plan is better than no plan. It may be a plan for the coming quarter or month. Or maybe for the next two weeks. Anything beats the pressure of looking for something to preach each week. There are multiple benefits to developing a preaching plan. It saves time. It relieves stress. It allows you to work ahead. It enables you to be intentional about the diet you feed your congregation. And it...

July 20, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
Saturday Shout-Outs is my weekly bulletin board about my weekly highlights and some articles I have found worth sharing. Thanks to President Henry Perkins for the privilege of being the keynote speaker for the California Baptist State Convention in Long Beach this week. Wednesday, my connecting flight through Atlanta was delayed because of weather. I did not land in time to get to the church to preach. A big shout-out to our Pastor of Christian Education, Donald Lewis, for being ready to preach. Check out A Brief Response to the George Zimmerman Verdict I am grateful for the opportunities I...

A Brief Response to the George Zimmerman Verdict

July 16, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
Several weeks ago, we had a membership meeting at the Shiloh Church. During the meeting, I made several comments about the trial in which George Zimmerman was accused of murdering Trayvon Martin. The next day, a member sent me a note thanking me for sharing my thoughts about this important matter. That note stuck with me. He was right. Outside of my passing comments in that meeting, the members of my congregation had no way of knowing how their pastor processed these events. I strive to preach the Bible, not current events. But this time my silence on a big cultural...

Notes from Sunday – 07/14/13

July 14, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
I love the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church! I came home from a long week physically tired but spiritual refreshed. I was really excited about being in my pulpit this morning. As Saturday passed, I had a nagging suspicion that the George Zimmerman verdict would be announced before the day was over. I was right. So I changed my preaching plan for the day. I think it was for the best. Our youth made it home safely from youth camp Saturday evening. May the week they spent in the word and in service to others bear much fruit to the glory...

Overcoming Hindrances to Effective Prayer

June 28, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
There are two primary reasons why you should pray. The first is obedience to duty. That is, we should pray because the word of God commands us to pray. Period. The second reason why you should pray is more pragmatic: Prayer works! God answers prayer. It pleases God to meet the needs of his children through the means of believing prayer. But while answered prayer is one of the great motivations to pray; unanswered prayer can discourage your prayer life. If your prayers are not being answered the way you desire, I recommend that you do two things. Continue to...

Notes from Sunday – 06/23/13

June 24, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
I praise the Lord for the opportunity to worship corporately and publicly with the saints of the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church today. In my Bible Study Fellowship, I taught on 1 Timothy 6:1-2: "The Ethic of Christian Servanthood." In verse 1, Paul gives instructions for serving unbelieving masters. In verse 2, Paul gives instructions for serving believing masters. (I plan to teach verses 3-10 next Sunday). As always, it was good to have our guests in worship today. I preached from Daniel 9: "Prayer that Makes a Difference"  Daniel 9 records one of the greatest yet neglected prayers of the Bible....

Notes from Father’s Day 2013

June 17, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
I hope you had a great Father's Day weekend! I thank God for my father: H.B. Charles Sr. My father died on Father's Day weekend. And I used to find Father's Day very painful. But I was filled with grateful memories this weekend. I only hope that I may become half the man and preacher my father was. I am indescribably thankful for my three children - H.B. III, Natalie Marie, and Hailey Breanne - also known as, "The Terrorists." We had a fathers-sons breakfast Saturday morning at the Shiloh Church. It was a good time of fellowship among Christians...

Two Great Reasons to Preach the Bible

June 13, 2013
By H.B. Charles Jr.
In my pulpit I preach from the Bible for two reasons. First, I am not smart enough to preach anything else. If I were to preach on social issues, there are sociologists in my congregation who would know far more about them than I. If I were to preach on political issues, there are politicians who would know more than I do in that field. Second, I am too smart to preach anything else because I know that God blesses his Word and it will not return void. - O.S. Hawkins, Jonah: Meeting the God of the Second Chance, p....
