Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you to preach faithfully, clearly, and better.
In this episode, we’ll discuss theological disciplines for expository preaching.
As a study and advocate of expository preaching, I believe that it is the most faithful way to handle the word of God.
Why expository preaching? Because I believe it is the most faithful way to handle the word of God. Expository preaching is the proper response to God-breathed scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-4:2).
The bottom line of this episode is that faithful exposition is theologically informed. It should be doctrinal, not merely devotional. Beyond the important exegetical work – word studies, grammar, context, and background – theological reflection should shape your sermon preparation.
What are the theological disciplines of expository preaching?
Biblical Theological. Biblical theology studies the Bible as one grand story with a unified and progressive message that centers on and climaxes in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Historical Theology. Historical theology is the study of councils, creeds, and commentaries to understand the history of interpretation of your sermon text.
Systematic Theology. Systematic theology considers what the Bible comprehensively and categorically says about the topics and themes in a logical and organized way.
Practical Theology. Practical theology is about the practical implications of biblical truth on the Christian life, the local church, and a Christian worldview.
