  • #095: Marks of a Good Sermon Outline [PODCAST]
  • Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

In this episode, I want to talk to you about marks of good sermon outlines. Some preachers disregard the structure of the sermon.  Others are more concerned with the outline than anything else. Both extremes are wrong. Sermon outlines should serve the preacher, the text, and the congregation.

Here are practical tips to help develop effective sermon outlines…

    1. Remember who the sermon outline is for.
    2. Let the text shape the outline.
    3. The outline serves the text.
    4. Support the main idea of the sermon.
    5. Practical exposition in your outline.
    6. Strive for clarity.
    7. Maintain unity with transitional sentences.
    8. Maintain movement in the sermon outline.
    9. Do not merely describe the text.
    10. Use subpoints carefully.
    11. Linke outline points with parallelism.
    12. Do not overuse alliteration.
    13. Craft complete sentences.
    14. Use commentaries.
    15. Review sermon outlines from others.
    16. Place application in your sermon outline.
    17. State your sermon outline strategically.
    18. Preach the text, not the outline.
