Lloyd C. Blue Interview
I recently interviewed Dr. Lloyd C. Blue, who lives in Dallas and leads the Lloyd Blue Ministries. Years ago, I would miss the E.K. Bailey Conference every year, because of scheduling conflicts. My associates pastors would attend and bring me back the recordings. I was introduced to the ministry of Lloyd Blue through those recorded lectures. We connected several years ago, during an event at which we were both scheduled to speak. His fond memories of my father were such an encouragement. I had the following conversation with Dr. Blue while he was in Jacksonville, minister to the men of our congregation....

Notes from Sunday – 10/14/12
Yesterday was a long, good day of worship. I really enjoyed teaching my Bible Study Fellowship group. In completed an exposition of 1 Timothy 1:3-11. I plan to teach 1 Timothy 1:12-17 next week. As always, it was great to have our guests in worship yesterday. Our children’s choir sang during the 10:15 service. Hailey participated for the second time. And for the second time, she stared at the floor monitors, rather than actually singing. The choir sang a Thomas Whitfield classic, “Only A Look.” Loved it. Praise God for the seven persons who were baptized yesterday! I preached from...

Speaking @ Christ Second Baptist Church of Long Beach
Wednesday night, I preached for Pastor Welton Pleasant at the Christ Second Baptist Church of Long Beach, CA. Christ Second Baptist Church is celebrating its 105th church anniversary this month. Pastor Pleasant, whom I have known for some years, invited me in honor of my father, who pastored the church for ten years, before he was called to Mt. Sinai in Los Angeles. I remember the first time I preached at Christ Second Baptist. I was 16-years-old boy preacher. It was not long after my father had died. Members greeted me and told me how much I reminded them of...

Notes from Sunday – 10/07/12
I love first Sundays! We celebrated the Lord’s Table in both worship services. We also welcomed our new members that completed New Members Class Saturday. What a joy! By the way, I really enjoyed my time with our new members Saturday morning. They had really great questions. And I enjoy talking about Christian doctrine. I was encouraged by their eagerness to learn. It was good to have our guests in worship today, including the Raines High School class of 1977. In my Bible Study Fellowship group, I taught from 1 Timothy 1:3-8: “A Warning against False Teachers.” In typical H.B....

Help, I Am Now The Parent Of A Teenager!!!
Today my son - H.B. Charles, III - turns 13-years-old. I remember the night he was born, as if it were yesterday. Crystal had not been feeling well for several days. The doctor put her on bed rest. That Friday, I was scheduled to preach in Atlanta. I didn’t want to go. But Crystal and her mom urged me to go. I was only to be gone for 24 hours. Crystal’s mom was going to stay with her. And Crystal was not due for another 6-7 weeks. What’s the worst that could happen? Of course, H.B. was born that night,...

A Prayer for the Observance of the Lord’s Supper
God of all good, I bless thee for the means of grace; teach me to see in them thy loving purposes and the joy and strength of my soul. Thou hast prepared for me a feast; and though I am unworthy to sit down as guest, I wholly rest on the merits of Jesus, and hide myself beneath his righteousness; when I hear his tender invitation and see his wondrous grace, I cannot hesitate, but must come to thee in love. By the Spirit enliven my faith rightly to discern and spiritually to apprehend the Savior. While I gaze upon...

Ralph Douglas West Interview (Part 3)
Over the course of my ministry, I have had the privilege of meeting and knowing some great men of God. Many have been very kind to me. And I have been fortunate to have helpful, challenging, and encouraging conversations that have blessed my life and ministry. I have recently been thinking it would be great to share some of these conversations, if possible. This is what motivated me to interview guest speakers who visit my congregation. While speaking at the Shiloh Church, Ralph Douglas West was gracious enough to let me interview him. It was such a good time, we...

Ralph Douglas West Interview (Part 2)
Here is part 2 of my interview with Dr. Ralph Douglas West, Senior-Pastor of the Church Without Walls in Houston, TX. It is probably better to call this a conversation, not an interview. We just talked about life and ministry for more than two hours. Again, I am grateful that Dr. West was so generous with his time and so candid with his answers to my questions. In this section of the interview, Pastor West discusses the story of his pastoral ministry. From there, we will talk about preaching I hope you find this interview helpful. If so, share it...

Ralph Douglas West Interview (Part 1)
I recently had the opportunity to interview one of my preaching, Dr. Ralph Douglas West, the founding and Senior-Pastor of the Church Without Walls in Houston, TX. I have known Ralph West since I was a boy. And he has been a model preacher/pastor that I have followed over the course of my ministry. I cherish his friendship, counsel, and encouragement. It was my privilege to sit down with Pastor West for this one-one-one. I expected this interview to be about an hour. But Pastor West was so generous with his time, we talked for 2 1/2 hours! This is...
