September 22, 2014
By H.B. Charles Jr.
This is episode #010 of The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better. In this episode, we will talk about the things you should do after you have preached. Sermon preparation is hard work. It involves 20 hours of prayer, labor, repentance, thanksgiving, and meditation. While preparation is hard work, so is recovery. Preaching takes something out of you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Preaching can be even more draining and discouraging when no one responds, so what do you do? Here are seven things I recommend you do after the sermon is...

Happy 72nd Birthday, Mt. Sinai!

September 14, 2014
By H.B. Charles Jr.
The Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church of Los Angeles celebrates 72 years of Christian witness today. And I celebrate with Mt. Sinai today, even though I am on the other side of the country. My personal, spiritual, and ministerial roots are deep in the soil of Mt. Sinai. My father - H.B. Charles, Sr. – was the second pastor of Mt. Sinai. He led the church for more than 40 years. It was the only thing I ever saw my father do. My mother was both the church secretary and minister of music at Mt. Sinai. I still have family...

The Charles Spurgeon Pulpit

September 3, 2014
By H.B. Charles Jr.
Easter Sunday 2014, before I gave the benediction at the end of the worship service at the Shiloh Church, I took a few minutes to point out that I was preaching for a new pulpit desk. Many in the congregation did not notice anything different. But to say I was excited  is an understatement. More than that, I was moved by the gravity of the implications. Simply trying to make note of the new desk before we dismissed, I started rambling on about the ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers. Our Media Team captured the moment and thought...

The Difference Jesus Makes

September 2, 2014
By H.B. Charles Jr.
I am pleased to announce the publication of my new book, The Difference Jesus Makes: Trusting Him in Every Situation (Moody Publishers). I am excited about this book for several reasons. First of all, this book simply retells and explains Bible stories. I believe we need more good books on Christian doctrine. But the Bible most often teaches truth through stories, not systems. Our generation suffers from biblical illiteracy. And I believe a reintroduction to the stories of the Bible is a big step toward revival. Furthermore, the stories in The Difference Jesus Makes are about the Lord Jesus Christ....

This is Episode #009 of The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better. In this episode, we will talk about seven books every preacher should read on preaching (Plus one). Faithful preachers are diligent readers. First and foremost, read the Bible! GUEST POST: Fighting Fairly For Your Youth Ministry

August 21, 2014
By H.B. Charles Jr.
The following is a guest post by Cameron Triggs, Pastor of Youth and Young Adults at the Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL. He blogs at camtriggs.com.   It happened again. No support. No budget. No promotion. No encouragement. No help. No volunteers. Few students. Exhausted Youth Pastor. Many churches struggle in this area. Most congregations still focus on their natural tendency to be adult-centered at the expense of excluding children & teens. In some sense, they are treated as a Junior Varsity team that few support. As youth workers, our job is to change that. We have to encourage the whole church...
