Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you to preach faithfully, clearly, and better.
I have recently concluded preaching through the Gospel of Mark. I started the study before the COVID-19 pandemic. It took me a few years to get back to it, preaching it in sections, as I preached other short series. The series consisted of eighty-seven sermons.
I have around fifty commentaries on Mark’s Gospel. I have read through each of them in my preparation for every message. That list of Mark-specific commentaries does not include study Bibles, multi-book commentaries, and other Bible study resources. (Yes, I read too much commentary. It is the way I have studied the Bible for years, and, at this point, I’m not sure this old dog can learn new tricks.) The following are a few of the commentaries that I have found to be useful tools during my studies.
- New Testament Commentary: Exposition of the Gospel According to Mark | William Hendriksen
- Exploring the Gospel of Mark | Jerry Vines
- New American Commentary: Mark | James Brooks
- Pillar Commentary Series: Mark | James R. Edwards
- The Gospel of Mark | D. Edmond Hiebert
- The Gospel According to St. Mark | J.D. Jones
- Zondervan Exegetical Commentary (NT): Mark | Mark L. Strauss
- IVP New Testament Commentary: Mark | Ronald J. Karnaghan
- What the BIble Teaches: Ritchie NT Commentary: Mark | H. Paisley
- Expository Thoughts on the Gospels: Mark | J.C. Ryle
- Expository Reflections on the Gospel of Mark | Douglas Sean O’Donnell
- Preaching The Word: Mark | R. Kent Hughes

- Mark: A Theological Commentary for Preachers | Abraham Kuruvilla
