  • #150 | My New Year Preaching Resolutions [PODCAST]
  • Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

In this episode, H.B. shares several of his new year preaching resolutions to grow in his pulpit ministry in 2024.

To be more prayerful in my sermon preparation. I recognize the vital role prayer plays in sermon preparation. For this reason, I desire to be even more prayerful in my word-work for pulpit ministry.

To finish my sermon preparation earlier in the week. I have been committed to starting my sermon preparation as early as possible. I now want to be more diligent about finishing as early as possible.

To get sharper in the original languages. I will never be an expert in Hebrew and Greek. However, I want to sharpen my skill in the original text to aid my Bible interpretation and to do it more quickly.

To be more selective in the commentaries I use. I typically read everything I can get my hands on for each text I study to preach. I desire to focus more on the best commentaries on each book of the Bible.

To work harder at sermon preparation. I start thinking about sermon application too late in the process. I want to start earlier. And I want to be more intentional and strategic about communicating truth for life.

To spend more time in the Old Testament. I spend most of my time in New Testament texts. However, I am planning to spend some time this year in Old Testament narrative, and Old Testament prophecy later.

To preach less than I have in the past few years. I have not done well with planning breaks recently. And I have not taken the time that I scheduled. Hopefully, that will change this year that I may rest more.

BONUS: I am a young dinosaur who still uses physical books. I plan on getting to know my way around Bible software a little better this year.

We complain today that ministers do not know how to preach; but is it not equally true that our congregations do not know how to hear?
