Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.
I do not think preaching needs an adjective, modifier, or descriptor. Either it is preaching or it is not. If I was forced to pick a term to describe preaching, it would not be expository. It would be the word “Faithful.” The goal of the preacher should be to be faithful.
What does it mean to preach faithfully?
Here are ten characteristics of faithful preaching…
- Preach as a herald.
- Preach the text.
- Preach the gospel.
- Preach with conviction.
- Preach with clarity.
- Preach with purpose.
- Preach for a verdict.
- Preach with love.
- Preach in the Spirit.
- Preach as a preacher.
A sermon that people find difficult to understand it not a good sermon! The preacher may be impressing people with theological jargon, complex doctrinal concepts, and long trains of philosophical thought but, if it isn’t understandable, it will all amount to a distraction from the Lord. Make it plain, preacher. Simple, but not simple-minded. Deep, but not over our heads.
