  • #105: Some of My Favorite Books on Preaching [PODCAST]

Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

There are several ways to become a better preacher. First, you become a better preacher by preaching. LIkewise, you become a better preacher by listening to good preaching. Thirdly, you learn to preach by studying preaching.

Leaders are readers. Specifically, preachers should regularly read books on preaching, as a part of your reading plan. There are classic books on preaching every preacher should read. Then there are many good books that should be added to your library and read for growth.

Here are ten of my favorite books on preaching…

    1. Why Johnny Can’t Preach (The Media Have Shaped the Messengers) | T. David Gordon
    2. 8 Hours or Less (Writing Faithful Sermons Faster) | Ryan Huguley
    3. The Sermon Doctor (Prescriptions for Successful Preaching) | Harry Farra
    4. Preaching in Black & White (What We Can Learn from Each Other) | E.K. Bailey & Warren Wiersbe
    5. Well-Driven Nails (The Power of Finding Your Own Virtue) | Byron Forrest Yawn
    6. Preaching With Passion | Alex Montoya
    7. Preaching Evangelistically | Al Fasol, Roy Fish, Steve Gaines, & Ralph Douglas West
    8. Saving Eutychus (How to Preach God’s Word and Keep People Awake) | Gary Millar & Phil Campbell
    9. Learning from a Legend (What Gardner C. Taylor Can Teach Us About Preaching) | Jared E. Alcantara
    10. New Testament Exposition (From Text to Sermon) | Walter L. Liefeld

What are some of your favorite books on preaching?

“Exposition is much like serving chicken for dinner. We have killed the chicken, plucked its feathers, dismembered its body, but you will never see chicken feet or necks served on the platter. You serve the best part of the chicken.” – Alex Montoya
